This is a restored World Map from 1721, a double hemisphere projection by the foremost English cartographer of his day, John Senex.

The map provides a fascinating look at a number of the surviving myths and cartographic inaccuracies of the early 18th Century. California is shown as an island, both New Zealand and Australia have incomplete coastlines, there is no sign of Antarctica, New Guinea is still shown as connected to Australia, and the Northwest Coast of America ends near the present day Straits of Juan de Fuca, with a speculative remnant of the old land bridge between Asia and America shown, but without meaningful detail.

The map includes 4 smaller Northern and Southern Hemisphere projections, an armillary and other scientific drawings. An allegorical vignette across the top shows the four continents as women, with Europe, the scholar, studying the globe, Asia, the exotic trading partner, with an urn of incense, while the primitive Africa and America appear on the far side of the title cartouche.

The reference was a single, average quality, seamless scan of a physical document. Paper wear and folds were dressed out and the missing information recreated from existing detail - missing or damaged lettering and landmark features duplicated using existing examples. Also, because this is a restoration of a hand-drawn map, a significant amount of original pencil lines were removed along with false starts and unfinished lettering.

Also, the original map has a background of horizontal lines that are quite jarring so these were removed completely while retaining the beautiful, hand drawn cartouche.

  • The map is A2 (16.5" x 23.4" / 420mm x 594mm) in size with the mount and frame additional to these dimensions making the final piece larger overall by approximately 6" on each axis (approx. as the framing for each instance is bespoke and therefore unique).
