MEMORIAL PET PORTRAITS
Our house, your home, now frozen fields of winter,
An empty place where even shadows will not stay.
My heart drifts room to room consumed by sorrows splinter,
Searching for the small sun that once warmed every day.
It is always with me.
Some pets leave an impression that never really fades. The familiar expression, the little habits, the unmistakable character that made them such a special part of your life.
Using your favourite photographs as the reference, I'll create a hand-drawn memorial portrait that captures the details you remember and love, giving you something personal to remember them by.

A PORTRAIT TO REMEMBER THEM BY
When you've shared years of your life with a pet, it's often the smallest details that stay with you. The way they looked at you, the particular tilt of their head, the markings around their eyes or an expression you could recognise anywhere.
Photographs capture those moments, but a hand-drawn portrait offers an opportunity to bring the details you remember most into focus.
Working from your favourite photographs, I'll carefully draw your pet's individual features, paying particular attention to their expression, eyes, coat and markings. It's not simply a case of reproducing a photograph - every detail is considered and drawn by hand to create a portrait that feels true to the pet you knew.
The finished artwork is something personal to keep and display, created with care and an understanding of just how much those familiar little details can mean.
MEMORIAL PET PORTRAIT EXAMPLES
Every memorial portrait begins with photographs that mean something to the person commissioning it. Sometimes they're clear and detailed; sometimes they're older images, or the only photographs available.
Here are four examples of portraits I've created, showing how I've worked with different reference photographs to capture the individual character of pets who are dearly missed.

This memorial portrait of a beautiful Cockapoo called Ruby shows how small artistic adjustments can make a real difference.
I brightened her eyes and subtly reduced some of the grey in her coat, without removing the features that made her recognisable. I also removed her collar and tag, allowing the portrait to focus entirely on Ruby herself rather than a particular moment in her life.

I love this portrait. I think it's the eyes - I KNOW this expression!
At the customer's request, I used a high-end oil brush set to create a less detailed, higher-contrast style. It's an approach that works particularly well for memorial portraits, giving the finished artwork a distinctive, painterly quality.
I also brightened the eyes and removed the blanket, keeping the focus on the dog's expression rather than the surroundings.

This is one of many memorial portraits I have drawn for the members of a Spaniel owners' group. This particular portrait shows the dog in a favourite place.
This is something I can do either from a reference photo with the dog in the location or separate references of the dog and the location. It is a beautiful way to show the dog in their happy place.

A dog's paw can be every bit as recognisable as their face.
This artwork was created as a companion to a full-body memorial portrait. The original reference photograph had rather harsh lighting, which made it difficult to see the natural colours and finer details of the fur. Using additional reference photographs, I was able to correct the lighting and recreate the dog's familiar coat colours, turning a simple photograph of a paw into a very personal keepsake.
WORKING WITH CHERISHED PHOTOS
When a pet is no longer with us, we don't always have the luxury of choosing the perfect reference photograph. Sometimes the image we treasure most is a little blurry, poorly lit or taken from an awkward angle. It might even be the only photograph we have.
That doesn't necessarily mean it can't become a beautiful portrait.
I've worked with photographs where important details were hidden in shadow, colours were distorted by lighting or parts of the pet were obscured by objects in the foreground. Where possible, I can use additional photographs to help reconstruct those details, adjust the lighting or simplify distracting backgrounds, while preserving the expression and character that made the original photograph special.
And if you only have one photograph, that's absolutely fine too. I'll take a careful look and explain what's possible before you commit to anything.
The most important thing is that the finished portrait feels like the pet you remember, not simply a technically perfect reproduction of a photograph.
CREATING A PORTRAIT TOGETHER
Creating a memorial portrait is a personal process, and I want you to feel comfortable with every decision along the way.
We'll start with your favourite photographs and a conversation about how you'd like your pet to be remembered. Perhaps there's a particular expression you'd love me to capture, a favourite pose or a small detail that's especially important to you.
I'll talk you through what's possible with the photographs you have, including any adjustments that might help the finished artwork. This could mean combining details from different images, changing the background or simply concentrating on the features you remember most clearly.
Once we've agreed on the direction, I'll create your portrait by hand, paying careful attention to those individual characteristics. You'll have the opportunity to review the finished artwork before it's prepared for printing or delivery.
There's no need to have everything worked out before getting in touch. We can discuss the possibilities together and take things from there.
